Volunteering Opportunities
Minibus Driver and Escort

Newmarket Day Centre runs 2 minibuses that are specifically adapted to carry disabled and able bodied clients. They are used to go out daily Monday to Friday to transport clients to and from the centre. The area covered is Newmarket and adjacent villages in Suffolk and Cambridgeshire (approx. 9 mile radius).

 

Each minibus is manned by a driver and an escort. Although the 2 roles are different it is important that volunteers work as a team to ensure passengers are transported safely to and from the centre.

 

Volunteer commitment – a morning or afternoon slot Monday to Friday.

 

‘Hot Plates’ delivery service

A 2 course pre-ordered meal is delivered to clients at lunchtime each day Monday to Friday. To provide this service volunteers use their own cars.

 

Meals are delivered on a set route; they are plated individually and the correct food temperature maintained with the use of a ‘hot box’

 

Volunteer commitment – 12 noon to 2pm Monday to Friday

 

Ladies Hairdressing

The hairdressing salon is open Monday to Friday and Volunteers are needed to undertake a range of general tasks to assist the hairdresser to provide a smooth quality service.

 

Volunteer commitment – A morning or afternoon session (minimum 2 hours)

 

Catering

Volunteers who help in the kitchen have an opportunity to undertake a wide range of different tasks that will assist Kitchen staff to prepare and serve a varied selection of food through each day including serving on the counter and helping to serve waiting/clearing tables over the lunchtime period.

 

All volunteer roles have their own responsibilities but some kitchen tasks require volunteers to be more aware of current guidelines and food safety training.

 

Volunteer commitment – 9am to 1pm & 12noon to 3pm Monday to Friday (minimum 2 hour sessions

 

Afternoon activities

Afternoon activities include – art, crafts, exercises and many more; volunteers help and assist staff whose role is to ensure all clients participate fully if they wish.

Administration

Volunteers are always needed to either stand-in on the reception desk when staff are on holiday etc; this could include answering the telephone, answering questions from visitors and other administrative assistance at busy times.

Light maintenance and Gardening

The day centre does not have a gardener or someone to do small maintenance tasks as a member of staff and we rely on volunteers to maintain the small areas of garden adjacent to the centre and do a few odd jobs as necessary.

Thank you to our volunteers

 

We are very lucky that so many dedicated volunteers give up so much of their time to volunteer. At present we have over 50 volunteers on a rota all of which are DBS (CRB) checked. We are never complacent, we value the time the volunteers’ give and their commitment to the day centre charity. Many volunteers do 2 or three different roles sometimes on the same day however, even with this fantastic commitment we never have enough volunteers especially to cover holidays, sickness etc. and to keep our charity shop open 6 days a week.
